Importing shapefile data into WMS 7.0

In version 6.1 of WMS, a shapefile is automatically converted to feature objects when imported.  In version 7.0, users first import the shapefile data into WMS as GIS Objects, and then convert the shapefile into Feature Objects.  This sequence allows users to convert only the portion of shapefile data that overlaps the watershed boundary to feature objects.

If a user has a functional license for ArcGIS 8.x on the same computer that is running WMS 7.0, then he or she can access many of the ArcGIS functions via the WMS interface.  To access the ArcGIS capabilities in WMS 7.0, users select the Enable ArcObjects command.

Users that do not own an ArcGIS license can also import a shapefile into WMS and select which polygons they want to convert to feature objects.

Depending on whether ArcObjects are enabled or not, the steps for importing shapefile data into WMS 7.0 and converting it to feature objects are slightly different.

To import a shapefile: To import a shapefile using ArcObjects:
  1. Change to the GIS Module ,
  2. Select Add Shapefile Data... from the Data menu,
  3. Find and open the shapefile,
  4. Click the Frame button to ensure that all the items are displayed in the graphics window,
  1. Change to the GIS Module ,
  2. Select Enable ArcObjects from the Data menu,
  3. Select Add Data... from the Data menu,
  4. If necessary, click the Connect to Folder button and select the desired folder,
  5. Locate and highlight the shapefile, then click the Add button,
  6. Click the Frame button to ensure that all the items are displayed in the graphics window.

When importing non-drainage shapefile data, you should create a new coverage before converting the shapefile to feature objects.  Examples of non-drainage data include land use and soil type shapefiles.  Examples of drainage data are stream networks, outlets, and watershed basin polygons.  To create a new coverage before converting the shapefile data:

  1. Change to the Conceptual Design module ,
  2. Right click on the Map Coverages folder, located in the data tree frame, and select New coverage,
  3. Rename the new coverage, if desired, and press the Enter key when done typing,
  4. Right click on the new coverage and select Properties...,
  5. Select the appropriate coverage type from the drop-down list,
  6. Click the OK button,
